Care is Expensive!
10 Ways to Pay for Care: Nuclear Care Program

The Hidden Federal Program Covering 24/7 Care for Former Nuclear Workers

By Jon Petty, Nuclear Care Partners

Most people have never heard of it — even those who qualify. But for former Department of Energy (DOE) employees and contractors who worked in nuclear weapons development, uranium mining, or related industries, there’s a powerful federal program that can change everything when it comes to long-term care.

A Life-Changing (and Little-Known) Benefit

At Nuclear Care Partners, we work with individuals who were part of America’s nuclear legacy — those who helped build and maintain our nation’s defense infrastructure. Many of them are now living with serious health conditions as a result of their exposure to radiation or other hazardous materials.

What most don’t realize is that the federal government provides comprehensive, tax-free benefits for eligible former workers. These benefits include:

  • Full coverage for in-home care — even 24/7 assistance.
For someone needing round-the-clock care (which can easily cost over $28,000 a month), the government pays the entire cost.
  • Up to $400,000 in tax-free compensation.
These payments are available to those diagnosed with covered conditions related to their work in the nuclear industry.
  • Coverage for home modifications and caregiver support.
If the home needs adjustments for accessibility — wider doorways, ramps, bathroom modifications — those costs can also be covered. In some cases, spouses can even be paid for providing care.

Who Qualifies?

The most common conditions we see include:

  • Various forms of cancer
  • Pulmonary issues, such as COPD or pulmonary fibrosis
  • Kidney disease
  • Neurological conditions like Parkinson’s

Eligibility depends on the specific site where the individual worked and the nature of their illness. Each case is unique — and that’s where we can help.

The “White Card”: Proof of Elig

Once approved, participants receive what’s known as a “white card.” It looks similar to an insurance card, but it’s issued by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and confirms that the holder is covered for medical benefits under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program (EEOICP).

For those not yet approved, the qualification process typically takes one to two years, as medical documentation and federal review are required. Nuclear Care Partners assists both those already approved and those still navigating the process.

Specialized Programs for Better Living

We’ve developed unique care programs focused on improving quality of life for our patients:

  • Kidney Care Program:
Supports patients managing kidney disease, including those requiring in-home dialysis. Our nurses coordinate and facilitate care to maximize comfort and independence.
  • Breathe Better Program:
Designed for individuals living with chronic lung disease. We provide customized lung-strengthening exercises and goal-based care plans — helping patients enjoy more good days than bad.

One of our favorite examples? A patient who wanted to attend his daughter’s wedding without needing oxygen. Together, we worked toward that goal — because quality of life should always be part of care.

Real Results, Real Impact

We recently worked with a patient who qualified for over $300,000 in tax-free compensation, along with fully funded 24-hour care. These benefits aren’t rare — they’re simply underutilized because so few people know they exist.

Why Awareness Matters

As one of our team members shared, “I didn’t even know this program existed until I started working here.” Unfortunately, that’s the case for many. But this benefit isn’t a secret — it’s a promise made to those who served their country through years of demanding and often dangerous work.

Our mission is to make sure every eligible individual gets the support, care, and dignity they deserve.
