Caring in America
With Podcast Host: Richard Wexler
Episode 117
Introducing the Home Team – A National Movement to Help Families Plan Before Crisis Hits
Good morning and welcome to another episode of Caring in America, the podcast for caregivers and care recipients.
For those who have followed Richard Wexler’s journey, you know this mission is deeply personal. Twenty years ago, Richard, his wife, and their two young children suddenly found themselves caring for all four of their parents. What they thought would be manageable quickly became a 14-year caregiving journey.
Three years ago, this podcast was born to educate and empower families. Last year, that mission expanded into a national nonprofit foundation: APlan2Age — created to encourage families to plan before a health event forces decisions in the middle of crisis.
Now, there’s an exciting new chapter.
A Bold New Project: The Home Team
Behind the scenes, a powerful collaboration has been forming — and Episode 117 officially introduces it.
Richard was approached by Bryan DeVore, a Senior Real Estate Specialist based in San Diego. Bryan works specifically with older homeowners navigating major life transitions. About six months ago, he shared an idea that immediately stopped Richard mid-conversation:
An HGTV-style show designed specifically for older homeowners.
But this isn’t just about remodeling kitchens.
This show follows homeowners — often older couples — as they face critical questions:
-
Should we modify our home and age in place?
-
Should we renovate to increase value and sell?
-
Should we downsize to a condo or townhome?
-
Should we prepare the home for in-home care?
-
Is senior living a better fit?
The home becomes the entry point. But the real focus is much bigger.
Turning a TV Show Into a National Education Platform
When Richard heard the concept, his mind immediately connected it to something he’s been teaching for 20 years:
Most families – conservatively, about 99% – have never had the full family conversation about aging.
- What happens if someone needs care?
- Is the estate plan current?
- Is there a financial strategy?
- Who makes decisions?
- How will care be paid for?
The HGTV-style show becomes the spark. The deeper mission is to connect families with the right professionals before panic sets in.
And that’s where the Home Team comes in.
What Is a Home Team?
Each Home Team will consist of 10–12 professionals in a local community who specialize in different areas of aging and later-life planning.
Depending on a family’s needs, a Home Team may include:
-
Realtor (often the first point of contact)
-
Estate planning attorney
-
Financial planner
-
In-home care provider
-
Senior living placement specialist
-
Home modification specialist
-
Reverse mortgage professional
-
Life insurance settlement expert
-
Long-term care insurance specialist
-
Other aging-related disciplines
Here’s how it works:
A homeowner connects through APlan2Age’s site. The local team meets with them. Conversations begin — not in crisis, but proactively.
- If their estate plan hasn’t been updated in 30 years? The estate planner steps in.
- If they’re selling and netting $500,000? The financial planner guides investment strategy.
- If they want to age in place? The home care provider and home modification expert step up.
- If senior living becomes the right move? The placement specialist guides the process.
Instead of scrambling in an emergency room hallway, families have a coordinated team.
The Big Vision: 300 Cities
Richard isn’t thinking small.
Research shows there are approximately 300 cities in the United States with populations over 100,000.
The goal?
-
100 Home Teams this year
-
100 next year
-
100 the following year
A fully built-out national network of 300 local teams serving communities across America.
Yes, it’s ambitious. Yes, it’s bold. But so is the aging crisis facing this country.
For Homeowners: What to Expect
The first episode of the show is set to launch in early March.
As the launch approaches, listeners will receive details on where and how to watch in their local markets. The goal is simple: To help you see yourself – or your parents – in these homeowners.
Let’s normalize conversations about aging- and let’s remove fear and stigma surrounding this.
Your local Home Team will help families understand what they don’t know before life forces them to learn it the hard way.
Because when crisis hits, emotions are high and decisions are reactive. Planning early changes everything.
For Professionals: Join the Movement
If you are a professional in the aging, housing, legal, financial, or care industries, APlan2Age is actively building a local Home Team nationwide.
Every city will need committed, mission-driven professionals who want to:
-
Educate families
-
Collaborate across disciplines
-
Serve proactively instead of reactively
-
Be part of a nationally recognized movement
Each team member will have:
-
A profile on APlan2Age.org
-
A link to their website
-
A personal introduction video
-
A place within their city’s official Home Team

The Bigger Purpose
As Steph so powerfully summarized in the episode:
“You don’t know what you don’t know.”
Most families don’t start learning about aging and care until they’re already in the middle of it. By then, stress, urgency, and emotion drive decisions.
The Home Team project is about changing that narrative.
It’s about:
-
Education over panic
-
Preparation over scrambling
-
Collaboration over isolation
-
Empowerment over fear
This isn’t just a show. It’s a national call to action.
Stay tuned for more details as the launch approaches — and until then, start the conversation in your own home.
Because the best time to plan…
is before you need the plan.
