When the Fire Came: Lessons from Wine Country’s Deadliest Night

In the fall of 2017, the beauty of California’s Wine Country turned into a nightmare. A raging firestorm swept through the region, destroying thousands of homes and claiming more than 20 lives.

Among the places hit hardest were two senior living communities — one Independent Living and one Assisted Living/Memory Care — both considered upscale, with monthly costs reaching up to $12,000. Yet when the flames came in the middle of the night, luxury offered no protection.

The tragedy revealed a painful truth: staffing levels and training matter far more than amenities. In these communities, a small overnight staff was left to face an unimaginable crisis — evacuating dozens of vulnerable residents with little preparation and no clear plan.

The aftermath was heartbreaking and chaotic. Families demanded answers. Regulators investigated. And many began asking the same haunting questions:

  • What kind of training do staff receive for emergencies?

  • How many caregivers are on duty overnight?

  • What evacuation plans are in place for residents with memory loss or mobility challenges?

These are not easy questions — but they are the right ones to ask.

Through heartbreak and courage, families and staff showed incredible bravery, saving lives against impossible odds. Their stories are told in the powerful book, Inflamed: Abandonment, Heroism, and Outrage in Wine Country’s Deadliest Firestorm — a must-read for anyone with a loved one in senior care.
